Keep being kind: International Day of Happiness

After years of advocacy by Jayme Illien, a United Nations advisor, International Day of Happiness began on March 20th, 2013. Illien grew with a strong passion to end global inequality after growing up in one of Mother Teresa's Kolkata orphanages. He was later adopted by an American family and made it his mission to put initiatives in place that would promote social solidarity.

Now, all member states of the UN are encouraged to participate in the International Day of Happiness, to raise awareness of the importance of positive emotion for humanity and to help others find ways to create happiness.

Although studying happiness is not a new concept, it's only in recent years that psychologists have begun to understand the importance and far-reaching implications of positive emotions. Scientists conclude that the key to human wellness is strong social ties and a sense of purpose. In other words, involvement in things that are for the 'greater good' of humanity.

Certified Proud was started with a very significant mission.

Treating all human beings with the same level of dignity and respect is paramount. No one should face discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or anything else! We know all too well the damage such discrimination causes on a personal level, and we believe that no one should have to sacrifice their happiness because of who they are, or who they love.

This year, the International Day of Happiness is of course focused on combating the negative feelings associated with the current pandemic. The theme is “keep calm, stay wise and be kind.”

At Certified Proud, we want to reiterate this message. We want to thank Jayme Illien for putting happiness, something easily overlooked in a fast-paced world (or business), high on the agenda. And we want to remind ourselves to take the time to focus on our own happiness. And you should too!
